We are thrilled to congratulate our authors who were honored with book awards at the recent annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association.
The Association for Queer Anthropology honored two of our authors with their Ruth Benedict Awards. Margot Weiss received the Ruth Benedict Award for Outstanding Single-Authored Monograph for her book Techniques of Pleasure: BDSM and the Circuits of Sexuality. The committee was impressed by "its contributions to theories of sexualities as circuits of pleasure necessarily, though productively, ensnared in the reproduction of social norms." And Gayle Rubin
received the Ruth Benedict Award for Outstanding Edited Volume for her book Deviations: A Gayle Rubin Reader. The committee praised the book for bringing together Rubin's important work on the ethnography of sexuality.
Danny Hoffman was also honored at the meeting. His book The War Machines: Young Men and Violence in Sierra Leone and Liberia won the 2011 Leeds Prize from the Society for Urban Anthropology. The prize is awarded to a book that uses ethnographic data from complex, transnational, urban societies in methodological innovative ways.
The Society for the Anthropology of Religion awarded Julie Chu their 2012 Clifford
Geertz Prize for her book Cosmologies of Credit: Transnational Mobility and the Politics of Destination in China. The Geertz Prize seeks to encourage excellence in the anthropology of religion by recognizing an outstanding recent book in the field.
Timothy Choy's Ecologies of Comparison: An Ethnography of Endangerment in Hong Kong received an Honorable Mention for the 2012 Gregory Bateson Prize awarded by the Society for Cultural Anthropology.
Congratulations to all these authors!
