As various news outlets are reflecting and much of the world is remembering, today is the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. In 1980, two contributors to Radical History Review #24, Jeanie Attie and Josh Brown, reflected on what Lennon’s death would mean for history:
“The unprecedented response to Lennon's death should not be mistaken for just another well-orchestrated media event. The widespread mourning and depression came out of the recognition of his role in a generation's shared past. The easy cynicism we often fall into must not become the tool for our understanding John Lennon or the ‘legacy’ of our own formative experience. We should recognize what Lennon represented in our history and that, in the uneasy formation of our culture and politics, he helped define and compose some of what we are now and what we hope to create.”
