Today marks 50 years since Barbie was first introduced at the New York Toy Fair in 1959. In Barbie's honor, we suggest you revisit Duke Press's classic Barbie's Queer Accessories by Erica Rand. Published in 1995, Rand's book was one of the first books to look at Barbie critically, and particularly to examine the way Barbie's image has been appropriated by artists and activists. If you remember giving Barbie a Mohawk, or if your Barbie had a secret crush on Midge, then Rand's book will resonate with you.
