The New York Times recently featured a roundup of the upcoming fall dance season that includes pieces with influences from all over the world: Indian dancer Madhavi Mugdal's classical performance, a version of the Nutcracker that includes Soviet Russian aesthetics and propaganda, and a flamenco troupe featuring a prominent Spanish guitarist.
While audiences have come to expect and enjoy this kind of global representation, that hasn't always been the case. A recent issue of Theater magazine, "Postglobal Dance," examines how dance has recently been transformed by international cross-pollinations and how artistic practice consistently incorporates transnational perspectives. The issue explores hybrid expressions being created by a new generation of artists.
